ArtBoretum
Kistefos Museum, Norway 2025
Rooted in Kistefos’ industrial past and oriented toward its evolving future, ArtBoretum extends the site’s legacy of innovation by reimagining how architecture can fuse with art, nature, and technology. The building engages the museum campus while adding a new layer of energy and vitality. From the scale of the territory to the detail of the architecture, it resonates with the landscapes and infrastructures that shape the place.
Rising vertically like the forest that surrounds it, the project minimizes its footprint while elevating its spaces toward the sky, where art unfolds in dialogue with the living landscape. Conceived as part of both the natural and cultural ecosystems of the site, ArtBoretum emerges from the forest, learns from it, and reflects its material cycles—giving new life to reclaimed resources and elevating matter through art and architecture. In doing so, it contributes to the identity of Kistefos in a radically contemporary way.
The critical height of the building is assessed taking into account the topography of the museum complex and its buildings, the highway infrastructure, and the trees, emerging just enough to enjoy the panoramic views of the context and grasp its beautiful diversity. The abundance of trees and vegetation in the forest surrounding the museum, and the existing pedestrian pathways, inspire us to take the visitor on an immersive journey, where art spaces are not immediately presented but gradually discovered. Visitors approach the building through the landscape, the agricultural land, and the forest, as if entering a natural clearing. The ground level remains completely open—a public threshold where nature flows through architecture and movement is guided by intuition. Here, architecture does not frame the forest; it becomes part of it. The visitor journey unfolds upward, with the program layered from the most permanent to the most ephemeral collections. This ascending sequence culminates at the roof terrace, a belvedere suspended among the tree-columns, here understood as inhabitable sculptures. From this vantage point, the full extent of the Kistefos landscape is revealed—a panoramic experience that reconnects the visitor to the ground they have traversed.
Arboretum looks at nature and industry, seeking to create a circular ecosystem that shows one more step forward into a future where architecture becomes a regenerative force—restoring landscapes, repurposing materials, and reactivating local economies. This project reflects a belief that cultural institutions can do more than preserve history; they can shape new narratives of sustainability, participation, and beauty rooted in place.
