Set atop the highest point of a secluded island in the Atlantic Ocean, Exuma House embraces the untouched beauty of its context—an island encircled by pristine beaches and densely woven vegetation—to build a dialogue between architecture and nature. Accessible only by boat, the island offers a remote, almost otherworldly retreat.

The house unfolds from the island’s port, which serves as the arrival point for visitors and materials alike. From here, a meandering path carved into the mass of vegetation leads up to the house, weaving through the landscape to connect port to home and home to beaches, offering a sensory journey where the island gradually reveals itself.

With the intention of leaving the island mostly untouched, the house is sculpted into the hilltop’s natural contours, with platforms carved into the topography for a layered spatial experience. Terraces reveal the island’s raw stone, grounding the architecture in its context while organizing the program to blend effortlessly with the terrain and follow the itinerary of the sun. Rising from this solid foundation, timber structures delineate the living spaces, their warm textures echoing once more the natural context, their straight lines framing the views. Above it all, a semi-translucent fiberglass canopy floats gracefully, diffusing sunlight during the day and glowing softly at night. Through it, the house becomes a living organism, adapting to the rhythms of the day and the changing qualities of light.

Life in the island is entirely sustained by natural elements—sunlight is harnessed for energy, rain and ground waters collected for use, and cooling breezes encouraged to flow through its open design. The native vegetation creates a protective yet porous envelope that ensures privacy while inviting the surroundings to permeate the spaces of the house. Its architecture promotes a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors, opening generously to the landscape, dissolving boundaries and inviting the natural world inside.

Exuma embraces sustainability at its core. The construction strategy uses a hybrid approach that merges site-specific craftsmanship with advanced offsite prefabrication, minimizing the environmental impact of the new architecture and harmonizing with the island’s natural rhythms. The commitment to environmental stewardship aligns with the artistic mission of the space in creating an ecological sanctuary where architecture, nature, and creativity intertwine, offering a transformative experience and a lasting homage to the beauty of the Bahamian landscape.
