Piedra Aurea

A memorial for Antón García Abril and Aurea Ruiz, Madrid, Spain, 2023

An architectural statement of kinship, Piedra Aurea is envisioned as a place of rest and memorial for Antón García Abril and Aurea Ruiz. With the potential to create a familial resting ground for future generations, the project seeks to develop a new artistic approach to the architecture of sanctuary. Piedra Aurea is an evocative reflection on life and death. The cracks and crevices in the broken material bring out the symbolic nature of the imperfections in the journey of life. The rigidity of the stone like concrete highlights the melancholy of passing. The action of piecing together the broken pieces create an emotional connection between the maker and the memory of Piedra Aurea. This connection invokes the spirit and transcends the person to realize death and look beyond. The Piedras explore the artistic and material qualities of different methods to create a sculptural piece that can become an inspiration for the larger architectural concept and works.
